A 12" x 12" catch basin is the workhorse collection point for surface and underground drainage systems in hardscape installations. It sits at grade level and captures water from patio surfaces, pool decks, driveways, and landscape areas, then channels it into your underground pipe network. Every properly designed drainage system needs collection points — and the 12x12 is the most common size for residential and light commercial hardscape work.

Catch basins are typically installed at low points in paver fields, at the base of slopes, at downspout convergence points, and along retaining walls where water needs to be intercepted before it causes damage. The grate sits flush with the finished surface while the basin below connects to your outgoing pipe runs.

    Installation Tips


    • Set basin at the lowest point of the drainage area — water must flow to it by gravity
    • Top of grate should sit flush with finished paver or turf surface
    • Use at least one outlet pipe run at minimum 1% slope to discharge point (emitter, dry well, or daylight)
    • Add a sump space below the outlet pipe to trap sediment before it enters the pipe system
    • Clean basins seasonally — leaves, sand, and debris collect in the sump over time
    • For large patio areas, use multiple catch basins rather than relying on one distant collection point
